Oakridge’s Middle school mathematics program builds a strong foundation in algebra while offering honors-track courses for advanced learners. In eighth grade, qualifying honors students may begin the study of geometry. Upon completion of the honors math sequence, most students are well prepared to transition into Algebra II or Honors Geometry at the high school level.

Oakridge’s Middle School English curriculum prepares students for the academic demands of high school by fostering both a deep appreciation for literature and strong critical-thinking skills. Through analytical writing, creative projects, and Socratic seminars, students engage thoughtfully with a wide range of texts. They develop an advanced understanding of abstract literary concepts, including figurative language, symbolism, characterization, and theme, while learning to articulate their ideas clearly and confidently.

Social Studies

social studiesIn fifth grade, students journey back to the founding of our nation, reliving the fight for independence during the American Revolution and concluding the year with the reunification of the North and South following the Civil War.

Sixth grade, students explore ancient cultures from a variety of perspectives while examining what makes a civilation successful. Beginning with early humans in Prehistory and Mesopotamia, students travel through time to the rise of Ancient Rome.

In seventh grade, students discover the rich world of medieval history and cultures. From the influence of Islam in Africa to the spread of Buddhism in China and Japan, and from Europe’s majestic castles to its knights, students experience the diversity and complexity of the medieval era.

Eighth grade, students take a deeper dive into American history while immersing themselves in civics. From the birth of the nation through the end of World War II, students also explore what it means to be an active citizen by analyzing Supreme Court cases and engaging in thoughtful debate.

Across all grade levels, students make connections throughout history through discussions and debates, complete hands-on projects, and develop critical-thinking skills and academic independence.

Science

scienceMiddle School science follows an inquiry-based approach designed to provide students with an authentic and engaging learning experience. Each unit begins with a real-world problem that challenges students to think critically and apply scientific concepts. Throughout the process, students are supported as they develop and use their scientific understanding to investigate, analyze evidence, and propose solutions. The curriculum blends hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools to empower students to think, read, write and argue like real scientists.

In fifth grade, students explore the properties of matter at both the macroscopic and nanoscale levels. They apply their knowledge to restore a natural habitat and assist a museum in repairing an ancient artifact once used to predict the stars across different seasons.

In sixth grade, students study Earth science through the lens of other planets in our solar system. By examining how planets formed, students learn that planets with similar origins may share structures and processes with Earth. Students also investigate global climate patterns and explore why some regions experience more intense rainfall than others.

In seventh grade, students focus on life science, exploring the importance of the human gut microbiome to overall health. They also examine why siblings do not typically look identical and investigagte how energy and matter flow through ecosystems.

In eighth grade, students apply their knowledge of physics to help a space mission determine what caused a spacecraft to be knocked off course, developing a strong understanding of Newton's three laws of motion. Students also assist a town in diagnosing water quality issues, discovering the law of conservation of mass and foundational chemistry concepts along the way.

Spanish

SpanishMiddle School students study Spanish through a total-immersion approach that builds real-world language proficiency. Interactive projects—such as skits and collaborative activities—help students develop conversational skills in engaging and enjoyable ways. In addition, students explore Hispanic history, civilization, and current events, fostering a deeper understanding of the cultures that shape the language.
